Tony will share some of his working methods in this workshop, concentrating on land, seascapes, figures, and still life subjects that have a bit of punch! Using direct strokes on a textured surface to emphasize “brushwork,” we will learn how to simplify our approach to achieve exciting impressionistic paintings.

This workshop is for those willing to go through the door marked “Leaving Your Comfort Zone” and enter a world of exciting and expressive pastel application!

We will experiment with ways to introduce colour and light into our work. This workshop is designed for those who want to become more painterly and less tight in their work. Each day will start with a demonstration with heaps of challenges and loads of individual help at the easel.

Materials list:

  • Bring as many pastels as you feel comfortable with. Colour range is more important than quantity.
  • I will be using mostly UART, LaCarte, Pastel Premier papers.
  • Solid backing board (I add foam board to my backing board to act as a cushion).
  • Your sketchbook/journal.
  • OPTIONAL: A few pastel pencils, charcoal pencils.
  • A selection of black ink markers (wedge-shaped ‘nibs,’ the fatter the better).
  • OPTIONAL: Toned Sketchbook for mixed media (Strathmore is a good choice).
  • I will provide reference images for students to choose from for their own paintings, but if you have your own, that’s fine!
  • Photo references you feel at ease with. Try and choose photos that have a good composition with a possible lead-in. A good focal point is always a good thing and a range of values.
  • Hand wipes, etc.
  • Masking tape, clips.
  • A sense of fun and an open mind!
  • Easels are provided by Central Art Supply.

All Levels, Minimum 12 Students, Maximum 15 Students.
